Unforgettable Joe Gibbs Racing Season Ends with 5th NASCAR Championship
Kyle Busch won the Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead Miami Speedway, earning the fifth NASCAR Cup title for Joe Gibbs Racing. It was a remarkable show of consistency from Busch (27 top-10 finishes this season) and an even more remarkable show of strength from the Joe Gibbs Racing team.
The season began with the passing of J.D. Gibbs at just 49 years old. Gibbs, son of team co-owner Joe Gibbs, had fought long and hard against a degenerative neurological disease. A few weeks later, the NASCAR season kicked off at Daytona, and JGR finished 1, 2 and 3 that day. Denny Hamlin won the 500, with Busch and Erik Jones right behind him. It set the tone for the rest of the season.

“That’s where it started,” Joe Gibbs said after Busch’s championship victory. “I think J.D. was there. And then it kind of continued the entire year.”
